About Us

Shapeshifters Brewery is a fully-licensed, 1 BBL microbrewery located in the back of a 150+ year-old Victorian building (shared with our sister organization Shapeshifters Cinema) near Jack London Square in Oakland, CA. We make all of our small-batch beers with locally-sourced, California-grown, seasonally-available ingredients. Our beers are sold (to 21+) in cans to drink on-site or to take home from the Shapeshifters store-front shop (open during show nights and special events only).

SF BEER WEEK—Fermented Film Night featuring One Pint at a Time documentary on Black-owned craft breweries

Tuesday, February 13, 2024, 8pm, Admission: $14

As part of this year's SF Beer Week, we are excited to screen One Pint at a Time (2021) a documentary film by Aaron Hosé on Black-owned craft breweries. While there is an extensive European legacy tied to beer-making, the reality is that beer has a far broader history rooted in the African continent. One Pint at a Time tells those stories in craft beer that have been ignored because of society's preconceived notions of who typically makes and drinks beer. The film follows Black brewers as they fight past discriminatory and financial hurdles to make a name for themselves within a multi-billion-dollar industry where they share less than 1% of annual earnings.

Enjoy a selection of beers made in our on-site microbrewery. Small bites from our café will also be available for sale. Plus free popcorn!

Our Brewhouse

Our tiny 1 BBL "nano-brewery" is an all-electric, 3 kettle, American-made stainless steel wonder manufactured by Blichmann Engineering. Each batch makes approximately two 15.5 gallon kegs, or about 248 pints of beer, which we ferment in a stainless steel unitank. Temperature is accurately controlled with a tiny glycol chiller. Every batch of beer is a hand-crafted work of art.

Our Beers

Öakschland Lager (5.10% ABV) has a full body and rich copper hue, and is exhuberantly hopped with classic favorites of the West, made with the finest municipal water.
In Stock!

Our signature Ice Cold Popcorn Ale (4.9% ABV) is the perfect movie theater beer. Whole popped popcorn is added to the mash along with loads of flaked corn and super light Admiral Pils malted barley. A dash of Cluster hops, an old timey North American native, adds just enough bite to call it beer. This beer is clean, clear, and perfect for a midday matinee or hunkering down in the back row with a tall bag of heavily salted popped corn.
Sold Out

Saison du Cinéma (6.2% ABV) is a refreshing classic based on the Belgian style. Bright, straw-yellow in color with a fluffy, white head, with mild, yeast-driven aromas and flavors of freshly-baked bread, and a satisfying finish on the palette.
Sold Out

At Land India Pale Ale (7.5% ABV) is a beer we have been dreaming about, a beer that we had to brew once we had our own brewery. It’s made from California grown barley and wheat sourced from California family farms that use sustainable practices and malted locally by Admiral Maltings in Alameda and loads of beautiful whole cone Cascade hops from the Victory Lee Hop Farm located on the Sacramento River, a project of California Beer Farms. Hops were added to the mash, added at first wort, added for bittering and flavor, added whirlpool and of course dry hopped during fermentation.
Sold Out

A Touch of Magic Kölsch Style Ale (5.3% ABV) is deceptively simple, with soft malty breadiness that sets the stage for subtle notes of apple and pear. Then through a sleight of hand, a hint of lemony citrus emerges, a mineral crispness, clean and dry. For the finale,... it vanishes!
Sold Out

Black Magic Stout (5.9% ABV) is a Dry Irish Stout, made with Gallagher’s Best Malted Barley and Clipper Malted Oats from Admiral Maltings, and a hearty dash of black malt. This beer is filled with chocolate and roasted coffee flavors and aromas. Oats malted in their husks give this a smooth finish. It’s like drinking chocolate cake.
Sold Out

La Gris en Rose (5.3% ABV) is a Grisette Belgian-style wheat beer made with malted wheat, flaked rye, rolled oats and Atlas Pils, fermented on saison yeast and locally-grown plums. Light with a subtle plum tartness.
Sold Out

Barbary Fig India Pale Ale Brewed with Prickly Pear (5.5% ABV) is a fruity, juicy IPA. EL Nopal is a cactus native to México. This beer was fermented on its fruit, known as La Tuna in spanish, or Prickly Pear or Barbary Fig. The word Nopal is derived from nōpalli, from the Aztec language Nahuatl. Nopales, including the pads or leaves, fruit, and seeds, have been used for thousands of years. Our backyard nopal has been in our family for generations, and we hope to pass on its fruit and the culture it embodies to generations to come.

Shapeshifters In the News
In the wake of SFMOMA's announcement to cut its historically-significant and beloved film program, KQED journalist Sarah Hotchkiss wrote a great article looking at how this affects the over-all ecology of the Bay Area film culture and the film programs and microcinemas (including Shapeshifters) that continue to cultivate it.
